“On Faith/Local” launches
Today The Washington Post launches On Faith/Local, the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia focused online channel of The Post’s popular On Faith section, featuring news and commentary about religion and matters of spiritual importance across the region.
On Faith/Local will present a dynamic panel of over 30 community leaders, representing a diverse spectrum of believers and non-believers. Each week, members of this group will offer an essay with a spiritual take on a local issue, as well as share sermons they are delivering in their own places of worship.
“Faith has a profound impact on a community. It connects people and ignites discussion in a way that few things can. We believe On Faith/Local will be a leading destination for D.C.-area residents to have informative, provocative and civil discussion about religion—or the absence of religion—with leaders and each other. We hope our readers will suggest ideas and engage with On Faith/Local the way they have with On Faith at the national level,” said Vernon Loeb, Local Editor, The Washington Post.
At launch, the panelists at On Faith/Local include:
• Rev. Dean Snyder, Foundry United Methodist
• Rick Wingrove, Head of Beltway Atheists and Virginia State Director of American Atheists
• Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Haggray, First Baptist Church
• Rabbi Bruce Lustig, Washington Hebrew Congregation
• Imam Johari Abdul-Malik, Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center
• The Rev. Dr. Luis Leon, St. John’s Episcopal Church
• The Rev. Canon Jan Naylor Cope, National Cathedral, Archdiocese of Washington, DC
On Faith/Local also will include a calendar that lists upcoming religious events and will feature religious blogs from around the region. With today’s debut, the section features Imam Johari Abdul-Malik on the meaning of Ramadan, a sermon from Reverend Samuel T. Lloyd dean of the National Cathedral discussing the issue of feeling close to God, and an essay titled “The Atheists among us” by Rick Wingrove.
On Faith/Local is the newest addition to On Faith, which was founded in 2006 by Sally Quinn and recently added a column by renowned religion writer Lisa Miller. Lisa Frazier Page is the editor of On Faith/Local, joining On Faith editor Elizabeth Tenety.
Readers can find On Faith and On Faith/Local on B2 of the newspaper’s Metro section each Saturday. For more information, visit washingtonpost.com/onfaith-local.
